November 11th Jazz Tales welcomed Saxophonist Ron Diehl

Ron Diehl has been an in-demand woodwind specialist in the Washington, DC area beginning in 1965 as a member of the United States Naval Academy Band performing on saxophone, bassoon, flute, and piccolo. In 1973 he was selected to play with the Navy’s official Jazz Ensemble, the “Commodores”, where he held the position of lead sax and section leader until June 1991.  Ron currently plays with both the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and the Baltimore Symphony Orchesra for pops concerts and special events including the annual NSO Memorial Day and Forth of July broadcasts on PBS.  He has played many shows to include Nancy Wilson, Hall Linden, Bob Hope, Sara Vaughn, Mel Torme, Chita Rivera, Vic Damone, Tony Randall, Barbara Eden, Rosemary Clooney, Johnny Mathis, Diane Schuur, and Tony Bennett.

Respected for his leadership mastery and teaching expertise, Ron has been Director of Jazz Ensembles at Towson University, Instructor of Saxophone, Jazz Band Director, and  Instructor of Jazz Improvisation at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) as well as Instructor of Clarinet and Saxophone at Prince Georges Community College.  He has been guest conductor of the Armed Forces School of Music Jazz Band and presented master classes at Ohio State University Jazz Festival, Middletown High School, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, Landon School, Wesley College, Anne Arundel All County High School Stage Band and Delaware State Jazz Band.
