Nixtaband is a New York City ensemble comprised of musicians with roots based in Mexico, and the US. The band emerged in November of 2017 with the idea of experimenting with Afro-Cuban, South-American, Afro-American and Mexican rhythms. The repertoire is largely based on a unique mash-up of Mexican Folk music with contemporary Jazz and Latin Jazz influences.
The name Nixtaband is derived from the word Nixtamal: the kernels of corn that are used to create masa. Masa is the main ingredient for many traditional Mexican dishes. In Mexico, masa is the foundation of nutrition for society. We believe music is the nutrition for the soul.
