Derrick Michaels is a prominent force in the creative music community, whose sonorous tenor saxophone tone and penchant for unpredictable phrasing has delivered him into the company of many of the nation’s foremost jazz musicians. Michaels delivers each musical idea with a gravitas and sincerity which is both unapologetically lyrical and uncompromisingly dynamic.
Born and raised in Baltimore, he evokes the rich history of the tenor saxophone throughout each performance. Brandishing both an unabashed romanticism and a reckless abandon, Michaels aims to communicate the most vital energy of the human experience through his horn. With an affinity for assembling highly synergistic ensembles, Michaels aims to bring listeners into the process of the music as it unfolds into the present moment.
A note from the performer:
“This performance takes place on the eve of my birthday, and I will be presenting brand new works for this very special quintet of highly accomplished and sensitive improvisers. We welcome you into the best listening room in Baltimore, to be a part of this occasion.” - Derrick Michaels
