The award-winning University of Delaware Jazz Ensembles have been around for nearly 50 years. The 18-20 members include graduate and undergraduate students, music majors as well as musicians studying other disciplines. True to the genre, the ensemble includes saxophone, trombone, trumpet and rhythm sections. The Jazz Ensemble’s repertoire is steeped in the sounds of the big bands such as Count Basie and Buddy Rich and will feature a number of big band favorites and standards from the Great American Songbook. For this special concert, trumpeter Gerald Chavis will dazzle the audience with his up-tempo sound.
Chavis has appeared as a sideman and bandleader for more than 40 years. He currently performs with his own ensemble as well as with Philadelphia-based society dance orchestras, and many church organizations in the Wilmington-Philadelphia area. He has performed with such national acts as Mick Jagger, Phyllis Hyma, Dr. Donald Byrd, The Temptations, The Dells, and the Spinners.
