Celebrating the music of Motown performed live at the gala concert and dance party to kickoff the Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival! This VIP fundraiser will highlight Montgomery County's most legendary Black nightclub, The Du-Drop Inn, which existed in Emory Grove from 1947-1980 hosting musical icons Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, James Brown, Little Richard, Tina Turner and several Motown legends. Along with contests for dancing and best dressed, the festive evening will feature the music of Motown and other classic songs from The Du-Drop Inn era performed by an all-star lineup of great area performers including Daryl Davis, Jay Summerour, Jimi Dougans, Robbin Kapsalis, Hardway Connection, Shirletta Settles, Ray Allen Apollo and Tom Clifford. Hosted by WPFW's Bill Wax and legendary sports broadcaster James Brown.
The event will benefit the community of Scotland, the first place where Black people owned land in Potomac, Maryland after freed slaves founded their own community there 150 years ago. Scotland’s AME Zion Church was flooded in 2019, and the greater DMV area community is banding together to rebuild and expand this historic structure. This special concert will be attended by leaders in faith, politics, media and sports, and is the kickoff event to the county-wide Juneteenth Festival at Cabin John on Monday, June 19th.
