Mike Geffner's Inspired Word

Mike Geffner’s Inspired Word, one of New York’s most popular indie performance series, presents Soundz & Vibez.

The night features a mix of music, poetry, and spoken word:

Grace (Gracie) Zhao is an American-born Chinese singer-songwriter based in New York City. A multi-instrumentalist, middle child, and proud daughter of immigrants, she loved creating spaces to share music—most of all when she took her seat at the piano bench as a “human karaoke machine,” improvising and harmonizing for everyone to sing along. Her music now aims to capture that spark of shared human warmth and crackling nostalgia through melodic and chordal storytelling. Her biggest influences include: Chinese music from the 80s and 90s, indie and folk guitar tones, jazz, inspired melodies, and the constant dialogue between words and song in musical theater.

Al Piper is a Brooklyn-based storyteller, actor, writer, singer originally from D.C., as well as a proud graduate of Duke Ellington School of the Arts High School. Their work focuses on intersectionality, tough love, and empowering others to speak their truth.

Kajal Patil and Samanvitha Danda are two poets from India currently living in NYC – and good friends. Kajal Patil has been writing poetry for as long as she can remember. Her early influences were Robert Frost and Robert Burns, then later, in a stronger way, Emily Dickinson and her unconventional approach to writing poetry, especially her focus on dark romanticism and the gothic nature of her work. Samanvitha believes in using art as activism and focuses her work on exploring themes such as climate change, identity, and mental health. She tries to push the boundaries of poetry through her work by melding other art forms to engage the spectator.

Aria Anjali is a 15-year-old singer/songwriter, piano player, guitarist, music producer and rising star. A born and bred New Yorker, Aria has been acting, singing and writing songs since she was 6 years old. Today you can regularly see her on the stage in New York City and the Hudson Valley, sometimes solo, sometimes with a backup band. She is still in high school but do not expect kid music from her. An “old soul,” Aria writes about life, death, and the world around us. Her songs are melodic and haunting, with pointed, often piercing, lyrics that make you think, reflect, and even shed a tear. She has performed on the main stage at the legendary Towne Crier, in Beacon, at New York’s City Winery, Dyckman Farmhouse, Taste of Tribeca and Taste of the Seaport, at The Hoot festival in Cold Spring, New York.

Hosted by longtime New York City journalist Mike Geffner, who founded InspiredWordNYC in 2009.
