Hazel Mitchell-Bell

A leading lady in the D.C. jazz scene, vocalist Hazel Mitchell-Bell appears on festival, concert and club stages, enjoying numerous sellouts. L.A. Jazz Scene’s Scott Yanow calls her “a powerful yet subtle singer.” George W. Harris of Jazz Weekly lauds her "Classy and uptown soft swing and soul,” and this singer also knows how to sizzle! Hear tunes from highly praised albums Stronger than Ever and Sack Full of Dreams with brilliant arrangements by pianist/music director Vince Evans (Prince, Phyllis Hyman, Luther Vandross). The band also features drummer Jc Jefferson, bassist Eric Glaser, guitarist Alvin White and saxophonist Paul Carr. As Chris Spector wrote for the Midwest Jazz Record, expect to hear “Top shelf jazz vocal, with a top shelf crew in tow.”

A leading lady in the Washington, D.C. jazz scene, vocalist Hazel Mitchell-Bell appears on festival, concert and club stages with numerous sellouts. Her music is heard across the U.S. L.A. Jazz Scene’s Scott Yanow calls her “a powerful yet subtle singer.” George W. Harris of Jazz Weekly is also a fan of her "Classy and uptown soft swing and soul.” Be forewarned - this singer also knows how to sizzle!

Born to a musical family in Fayetteville, N.C., Mitchell-Bell was influenced by Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn and Phyllis Hyman. Since 2016, she has worked closely with pianist and Music Director Vince Evans. She has been a favorite at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, City Winery and Westminster Jazz Night and set attendance records at Cafe Mezzanotte in Severna Park and Jazz at the Mural in Cambridge, Maryland. She has also appeared at The Kennedy Center, the Preservation Jazz Festival and the Sheldon Cultural Center in St. Louis.

In 2018 she released Stronger Than Ever, including standards from the Great American Songbook and R&B hits backed by an 11-piece orchestra. The indie album enjoyed 12 weeks on the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Jazz Chart, peaking at #12.

Jazz journalist John Murph writes “The Washington, D.C.-based singer already proved her mettle at singing jazz and R&B classics on her impressive 2018 debut... Sack Full of Dreams, Mitchell-Bell’s superb follow-up, shows that she has staying power.” The recording features interpretations of jazz, blues and R&B favorites made famous by Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and Luther Vandross along with some brilliant takes on Broadway repertoire.

Vince Evans has enjoyed a multi-faceted career as a musician, producer and educator working with such names as Prince, Phyllis Hyman, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Eddie Murphy, MC Hammer, Jonathan Butler, Bill Withers, Gerald Albright and Luther Vandross. Their band also features drummer Jc Jefferson, bassist Eric Glaser, guitarist Alvin White and saxophonist Paul Carr. They’ll perform favorites from both albums and introduce the kind of new arrangements that set them apart and keep fans coming back for more. As Chris Spector wrote for the Midwest Jazz Record, expect to hear “Top shelf jazz vocal, with a top shelf crew in tow.”
