Just like his namesake, jazz pulses through Ellington Carthan’s veins. This up-and-coming jazz pianist's diverse career includes performing, teaching, producing, and composing. Ellington holds dual degrees in Jazz Studies and Music Technology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He also received a Master of Music degree from Howard University where he studied with Cyrus Chestnut.
On April 16th 2024 Ellington was host and pianist with the Post Classical Ensemble for the show Beyond Category: The Concert Music of Duke Ellington which took place at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theatre. This concert was in celebration of Duke Ellington’s 125 anniversary and was curated by John Hasse. Like the Duke himself, Ellington strives to be beyond category and enjoys blending genres. However, he has certainly performed with jazz greats such as Warren Wolf, Kris Funn, Endea Owens, Ekep Nkwelle, Christie Dashiell, and numerous others. Ellington has also been honored to perform for President Joseph Biden and the Attorney General of Massachusetts. Furthermore, he opened for Cecile McClorin Salvant at the Kent Island Jazz Festival and is an alumnus of the Strathmore Artist in Residence program.
