Balance Campaign invites you to enter an imaginary world with exotic places. In the fabricated sounds of speech and melody from Steven Mackey's Indigenous Instruments, we discover "a [fantasized] culture and its uses for music, [with] 'folk melodies' idiomatic to...the kind of instruments they might play." Jennifer Higdon's Zaka, displays an aural tapestry derived from a fictional word, meaning "to do the following almost simultaneously and with great speed: zap, sock, race, turn, drop, sprint." Bill Ryan's Blurred, creates a dreamlike soundscape, giving the instrumentalists freedom of pitches, duration, and entrances. Each piece programmed showcases the composers' imaginative spirits, allowing a glimpse into the inner-workings of their creative minds.
Balance Campaign is a DC/Baltimore-based contemporary ensemble featuring flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion. They are forging new musical paths with their bold programming of works by living composers and interdisciplinary artistic collaborations. By working with local music programs and composers, Balance Campaign stays grounded in their community and committed to bringing works by emerging artists to life.
