Jazz Wants To Dance
The Scat Lady, Iva Jean Ambush, will perform Jazz and Soul Tunes that get you on your feet, and they are bringing the music to you. You can dance in your favorite chair or dance with your favorite partner.
Joining her will be a stellar group of musicians: Pete Frassrand (piano), Dave Marsh (bass), and Aaron Walker (drums). To open the show will be Vocalist Marcia Baird Burris. Special guest Vocalist Reggie Upshaw will bring some smooth dance tunes too. Plenty of music to keep your toes tapping and your fingers snapping.
Iva Ambush is a scat singing Jazz vocalist from Frederick, MD. Known as the Scat Lady, she decided to pursue a professional singing career more than 20 years ago when she returned to her birthplace. She steered clear of jazz as long as she could but having a family full of Jazz musicians, such as, trumpeter Lester Bowie, pianists Allen Ambush, Byron Bowie, guitarist Jonathan Townes, bassist Scott Ambush and band leaders Joseph Bowie (Defunkt) and members of the Bartonsville Cornet Band the clarion call was heard. Iva completed an "Emerging Artists Workshop" with Ronnie Wells at the Elliston Studio for Jazz Studies and private lessons with bebop legend, Sheila Jordan in the early 2000s. Intense master classes with Sheila Jordan, Dr. Horace Boyer, and Jay Clayton combined with rehearsal allowed Iva to grow immensely. Some of her other instructors include Dr. Frederick Tillis, Professor Charles Ellison, and the late Dr. Billy Taylor and Dr. Bro. Yusef Lateef.
Marcia Baird Burris began her singing career in 2001 in the music lounge of a hotel in Libreville, Gabon during an international conference she attended with her husband, the late Charles “Chuck” Burris, first African American mayor of the City of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Marcia began singing in earnest in 2009, following the passing of her husband and mother, after relocating to Washington, DC. Early in her career in New York, Marcia presented jazz and blues concert series and music-based benefits for local non-profits thus working with illustrious performers. Through her public relations work in New York and Atlanta, Marcia produced jazz, blues, theatrical and multicultural arts events and met a variety of artists. “But I was now drawn, perhaps Therapeutically,” she notes, “to expressing myself vocally through jazz.”
Reggie Upshaw is a triple threat from New Jersey! He can caress you with a ballad, or scat and swing your socks off. His clear tenor vocals can take you from Brazil to the bowels of Louisiana Blues. He has the harmonic sensibility of Jon Hendricks and the creative musical moves of Al Jarreau. Reggie has performed from Boston to Denver under the tutelage of Rebecca Parris, Ronnie Wells and Denver’s Hazel Miller. He moved to the DMV area after several years in the Military, honing his talent in some of the area’s best establishments. He is currently a member of DC’s Cloudburst Vocal Jazz Group.
