Baritone Ryan de Ryke and pianist Eva Mengelkoch celebrate the release of their CD “Songs for Lena” by NAXOS. This world-premiere recording features songs that Albrecht Mendelssohn (1874-1936) Bartholdy – a grandson of Felix- composed for his colleague and muse Magdalene Schoch. The CD has garnered international recognition and was chosen by Opera Nederland as one of the top 10 CDs of 2021. In this program Ryan and Eva contextualize Albrecht Mendelssohn’s songs with works by Hanns Eisler and George Butterworth.
Baritone Ryan de Ryke and Pianist Eva Mengelkoch have been musical partners for more than a decade. Their collaboration has led to critically acclaimed performances in the USA and Europe. A focal point of their partnership has centered around the German Lieder repertory including Schubert’s Winterreise, Die schöne Müllerin, and Schwanengesang, and Schumann’s Dichterliebe und Liederkreis. Ryan and Eva have championed the idea of bringing nearly forgotten and rarely heard treasures of the Lieder and song repertory to new audiences. As part of the Cylburn Chamber Music Series, for example, they performed Ballades by Carl Loewe and Hans Pfitzner, Tit for Tat by Benjamin Britten (feeling fortunate to having been coached by Britten collaborator and performer John Shirley-Quirk), and the world premiere of Lieder by Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy, whose serendipitous discovery had been announced to the music world only weeks before.
