Elin

Elin pays tribute to Flora Purim, legendary Brazilian singer featured on Chick Corea’s albums “Return to Forever” and “Light As a Feather”. Elin was honored to share the stage with Flora Purim and Airto Moreira (her husband and drummer/percussionist) for six consecutive nights at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in NYC (Jazz at Lincoln Center) closing the show for them each night. And to participate in this show, she welcomes New York City-based, fiery pianist-extraordinaire, Misha Piatigorsky!

Born in Sweden, and raised by a Peruvian father and an Irish mother, world-renowned vocalist, Elin, grew up in three continents — Europe, South America and the USA — exposed to a variety of musical styles and learning to speak multiple languages. Steeped in multiculturalism from the start, Elin fell in love with Brazilian music at the age of fifteen and decided to become a jazz singer when she discovered Bossa Nova. She never looked back!

From the velvety, smooth sounds of Astrud Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, to the passionate rhythms showcased by Leny Andrade and Tania Maria, Elin’s Brazilian jazz performances gracefully weave together the tropical vibes and syncopated grooves of Brazilian popular music (MPB), jazz standards and her own original music. A true “musician’s singer,” she always features top instrumentalists in her band, elevating the music to soaring heights all the while showcasing the nostalgic sounds of Bossa Nova that we’ve come to love.

Elin’s most recent project, Brasileira de Alma e Coração: A Brazilian Heart and Soul — a tribute to the late, great Brazilian singer, Elis Regina, recorded in NYC and currently in its final stages — represents a culmination of Elin’s love for Brazilian music and the jazz that shaped her career. The 12-song album features Latin Grammy-nominee Antonio Adolfo (Elis Regina's pianist and musical director in the late 1960’s), showcasing repertoire from the beginning, middle, and end of Elis Regina's career, including some of her biggest hits, rearranged by Antonio Adolfo and reimagined for the modern jazz quartet. Also featured on the album are bassist and 8-time Grammy award winner, Christian McBride, as well as Rafael Barata (drums — and winner of the 2016 Best Latin Jazz Grammy with Eliane Elias), Yotam Silberstein (guitar), and Nilson Matta (bass).

Currently based in Washington, DC, Elin, spent over a decade in the New York City jazz scene where she released her debut album, Lazy Afternoon, to much critical acclaim, winning songwriting awards and selling out Jazz at Lincoln Center twice. She also performed regularly at top jazz venues like the Blue Note, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Joe’s Pub, Iridium, and Smoke.

Elin has toured extensively and opened for Chaka Khan, George Benson, and Nancy Wilson at the Miami “Jazz in the Gardens” Festival. She also spent three months singing at the Lost in Translation hotel in Tokyo, and is a regular collaborator with EDM giants, Thievery Corporation — with whom she performed at the Kennedy Center with the Kennedy Center Orchestra. She has appeared on many of their albums and co-wrote three songs on their Bossa Nova-inspired album, “Saudade.”
