Simona De Rosa

"Born from a project by vocalist and composer Simona De Rosa, DJENUB is an artistic experience based on the evocative themes of travel, reunions, and the discovery of places through melodies of the South and elsewhere. Simona’s soaring vocals and lush musical arrangements paint a picture of the different worlds that she has experienced. The journey begins in her hometown of Naples, and continues onto Spain, Algeria (Djenub from the arabic meaning of South), Vietnam and China. The idea of conceiving an album dedicated to the sounds of the world was born in 2013 while she was living in New York. Simona received great acclaim and was awarded by the Mayor of Nassau Country for her "spirit of leadership and dissemination of Italian culture in the United States." Since then, Simona has dedicated her artistic endeavours towards the vision of creating a cultural model that could foster the exchange of ideas, traditions, and cultural and linguistic-musical innovations. Although DJENUB features Simona singing in four different languages (Italian, Neapolitan, Arabic, Vietnamese, English and Spanish), It successfully represents a bridge between Western and Eastern culture through a single dialect and a shared love of musical exploration between musicians from all around the world". DJENUB The project, not yet officially released, has been presented at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Shanghai, Tahui Jazz Festival, Tsinghua University in Beijing, Zurzolo Teatro Live in Napoli and has been chosen to be part of the program of the Europe Festival in Hanoi, Vietnam. Lately it as also been presented in twelve different cities during a Poland tour.

Simona De Rosa is a vocalist, composer, educator who has been praised for her refined musicianship, stunning vocal ability, and her deep emotional connection that shines through in all musical settings.

While Simona has enjoyed a remarkable career in jazz music, her love of exploring sounds and new ideas through music knows no bounds. Whether it’s a heart-wrenching delivery of a spirited Spanish bolero, a haunting traditional Chinese folk song, or an intricate and gorgeously grounded improvised passage in the jazz idiom, Simona’s crystalline voice and impassioned lyric delivery tells the stories of ancestors who have come before her, while also pushing the boundaries of what music can be.  Her care for the art form of musical exploration is apparent in the unbridled joy that you hear in her voice as she sings. No matter where her travels have taken her and where they will continue to go, it is clear that Simona’s beautiful songs and stunning vocals will always sound like home.

“In collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Washington”.
