Out of every artist success story, there is that one defining moment, a tipping point, that serves as perhaps the impetus to greater things. For R&B/Soul singer Trina Broussard, that arc was her breakout vocal rendition of Minnie Ripperton’s “Inside My Love,” from the 1997 top selling Love Jones Soundtrack. Her vocals absolutely draw you in, a nostalgic sound that speaks to the soul.
Trina Broussard is no neophyte to the game. She’s dripped background vocals for artists like Patti Austin, Jennifer Holiday, Raphael Saadiq, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Bobby Brown, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Rahsaan Patterson, Joi, Kenny Lattimore. She also did vocal recordings on tracks for Usher, Jay Z, Jeezy, and for Toni Braxton’s “Love Should Have Brought You Home” from the Boomerang Soundtrack, 1992.
But, she gets it honest. Her soul vocalist mother and jazz musician father, hailing out of the talent Mecca, Houston, Texas, inspired this songbird early. Singing into the hairbrush with pitch perfection, she was inspired by greats like Aretha Franklin and The Emotions. Fulfilling a dream to work with the Queen of Soul, Trina Broussard co-wrote Aretha’s hit single, “Here We Go Again” from the 1998 A Rose is Still a Rose album. Yes, Trina Broussard is layered with other talents.
Her body of works, Inside My Love album, her single, “Love You So Much,” (So So Def Records), and her Motown project, Same Girl, confirmed her rightful place among other neo soul artists. After taking some time off from the music industry, and drawing from her reflective experiences, Trina Broussard’s most recent tracks “Adieu” and “Where I’m Supposed to Be,” stemming from her partnership with R&B Moguls, reminded us that she can serve soul in the purest form, with a sound that is resolutely hers. Levitation happens even more when you see her perform live. Her authenticity will undoubtedly have you in your feels. Trina Broussard’s abilities as a recording artist continue to be limitless. Trina is currently working on her next recording project, slated to be released in 2021.
