Shalanda defines herself as a perpetual learner and student, instructor, performing artist, singer, songwriter, wife, mother of two beautiful girls, daughter, and friend. She is the Outreach Program Assistant, Choir Director, and Vocal Instructor at Chesapeake Arts Center. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, she began her musical studies at the Baltimore School for the Arts and went on to study Opera at The Juilliard School, obtaining a Bachelor's degree, and later a Master's from the Curtis Institute. Even though opera is her first love, she has found a true passion for jazz, R&B, and gospel music. She is thankful for every opportunity to inspire others with love, kindness, and her heartfelt joy in singing. This showcase includes live music, song, poetry, and dance featuring the music of Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample, Lala Hathaway, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Heitor Villa-lobos, Miranda Curtis and many others.
Members of the Kindred Spirits include Natalie Collins and April Thompson (supporting female vocalists), Derrick Thompson (piano), Rachael Winder (Alto Sax, Flute, Guitar), Matthew George (bass), and Philip Thomas (drums).
