Washington Master Chorale (Spring)

Due to the widespread outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the Board of Directors of Washington Master Chorale is cancelling all performances, rehearsals, and associated events through April 30, 2020. This will include our April 19, 2020 10th Anniversary program—Poetry Into Song—which will be rescheduled for a later date.

We conclude our concert season with a landmark event, the world premiere of a major new work by renowned composer David Conte for SATB chorus, mezzo soloist, piano and chamber orchestra on texts of the preeminent American poet Elizabeth Bishop. Bishop is one of the most important poets of the 20th Century. She was Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (a position now known as the Poet Laureate), a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner and a gifted teacher. Conte will attend the premiere and participate in a pre-concert talk moderated by the Poet Laureate of California, Dana Gioia. Gioia was both a student of Bishop and the moderator at the Chorale’s inaugural concert in February 2010. The concert will also feature Ralph Vaughan Williams’s stunning masterpiece Dona Nobis Pacem based on Walt Whitman poems and texts from the Bible in a masterful orchestration by David Rathbone. The pre-concert lecture begins at 4:00PM and will be free and open to the public.
