Baltimore has been the home of some tremendous talent throughout the years and Daryl Adams ranks amongst the best. He has formed a 9 piece ensemble to explore the uncharted Deep Water of jazz and world music with a sensibility that can only come from growing up on the blue collar streets of Baltimore.
Having discussions at the Randallstown jazz workshop run by Derrick Amin, Daryl Adams turned towards the fact that the teachers of the workshop needed a workshop of their own, to learn the things they heard and desired to play but that the market in Baltimore did not provide much opportunity to present. So together with the other teachers of the workshop, Daryl on upright bass, Terry Koger on alto sax, Derrick Amin on piano and Darrell Taylor on drums initially formed the music exploration group Deep Water Jazz Band. Adding musicians as the music required the group expanded to the 9-piece ensemble it is today.
Deep Water’s influences are historically long and diverse going back to Duke Ellington, Dizzy and Monk, however Miles is the forward looking seer that allows them to blend the history of jazz with its future. Come on in the Deep end, the Water is fine, Deep Water Jazz Band, a progressive contemporary jazz and world music band.
The Deep Water Jazz Band is an experiment in unbridled musicality. An approach to jazz music that seeks to explore the most literate (if not popular) aspects of the music with musicians who have experienced the deepest aspects of melody, rhythm and harmony; interpreting the rarest of post-bop idioms. With original compositions and the addition of lyrics to some of the more esoteric gems by the likes of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk, Deep Water Jazz Band relentlessly seeks the lost sunken treasures only found deep on the ocean floor of jazz. pure improvisation arrived at through trust, mutual respect and cooperation makes great music. now... let's GO Deep!!
