Rare Vintage Films of Jazz Legend Benny Goodman. Celebrating Benny Goodman's birthday!!
And, Live Music Made Famous by Benny Goodman with the John Richmond Swingtet live at Nighttown!
Featuring: John Richmond-clarinet & film curator, George Foley-piano, & Bill Fuller-drums.
This is a tribute to the continuing legacy of the “King of Swing”, clarinetist Benny Goodman, whose birthday anniversary was just two days ago, on May 30th. Goodman, who was born in Chicago in 1909, would have celebrated his 108th birthday. Clarinetist John Richmond first heard Benny Goodman live back in 1956, when Benny was a mere 46 years old. Richmond remembers that edition of the Goodman band as great, featuring such jazz legends as pianist Hank Jones and saxophonist Budd Johnson.
Tonight’s tribute includes rare 16 mm film footage of various Benny Goodman groups from 1936 through 1959, shown on Nighttown’s big (well, fairly big) movie screen, plus live performances of the Goodman repertoire by clarinetist Richmond’s three piece Swingtet, featuring George Foley on piano and Bill Fuller on drums.
This program is the first American presentation of “Hommage a Benny Goodman” presented by John Richmond in France in 1999. The same films will be shown, along with, in the interest of fairness, some fabulous film footage by Goodman’s rival, clarinetist Artie Shaw.
