“Ravita takes listeners on a kinetic, contemplative and ultimately expansive ride”
- Bill Milkowski
Ravita Jazz plays the music of their new album, Oriana, which has just hit the jazz charts! Ten tracks feature originals by Ravita and other band members and satisfying covers of “Black Coffee” and “Caravan.” Writing in the liner notes for the recording, journalist and author Bill Milkowski says, “together with his like-minded colleagues, bassist-composer-bandleader Ravita takes listeners on a kinetic, contemplative and ultimately expansive ride on Oriana.” The live concert experience will be even more engaging!
This is Ravita’s second album as a leader, following the highly praised 2021 album Jagged Spaces. The new recording features long-time friends and colleagues pianist Greg Small, drummer Nucleo Vega, saxophonist Benny Russell, and vibe/conga player Mark Leppo. Vocalist Deirdre Jennings brings considerable pipes and arranging know-how to the project.
Phil Ravita has performed with such jazz greats as Jimmy Heath, Bobby Shew, Claudio Roditi and Ruby Glover, appearing in countless clubs, concert halls and festivals. He is heard on numerous recordings and won critical acclaim for his work with the Grasso-Ravita Jazz Ensemble for Jagged Spaces.
On faculty of Mount Saint Mary’s University, Prince Georges Community College, Harford Community College, and the College of Southern Maryland, Ravita is a popular clinician. He holds a master’s degree in jazz performance from University of Maryland, Collège Park (2011) and earned a doctorate in music education from Boston University in 2020.
