Internationally renowned bassist and Mack Avenue recording artist, Rodney Whitaker, Professor of Jazz Bass and Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, will perform in Messiah College's Parmer Hall for our final Spring Concert of 2018. He is considered one of the leading performers and teachers of the jazz bass in the United States. Whitaker received his first national recognition performing with the Harrison/Blanchard Quintet. Building on his Detroit roots, he performed for seven years as bassist with Wynton Marsalis’ Septet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and has toured the world over the last twenty-five years, collaborating and performing with legendary artists such as Jimmy Heath, Cyrus Chestnut, Vanessa Rubin, Kathleen Battle, Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall, Jon Faddis, Terence Blanchard, Bob James, Benny Golson, Nicholas Payton, Joshua Redman, Stephon Harris, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett, Kevin Mahogany, Barry Harris, Gerald Wilson, Cedar Walton, Randy Brecker, Donald Byrd, Branford Marsalis, Tim Warfield, Roy Hargrove, and the late greats: Dizzy Gelispie, Mulgrew Miller, Tommy Flanagan, John Lewis, Marian McPartland, Joe Henderson, Hank Jones, and Betty ‘Bebop’ Carter.
Whitaker is featured on more than 100+ recordings with Pat Methany, Wynton Marsalis and many other great musicians . A proven and committed jazz educator, Whitaker will head the faculty in our 2018 Central PA Jazz Camp from June 13-16.
