Enamored by the 1950s, 60s and 70s jazz quintets led by Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Miles Davis and many others, John Lamkin's Favorites Quintet specializes in presenting a repertoire of jazz originals that harken back to the hard bop sound of the 70’s and 80’s, while embracing the present, yet moving toward the future of the music we affectionately call jazz. As artists move along life's journey, many experiences make indelible imprints on their consciousness, compelling them to try to recreate the aura of those experiences through their art. The band attempts to do that with it's collection of compositions on their current CD, “Movin.’” Like the legendary bands of the hard bop era, we are all acoustic, but woven into the tapestry of our music are the harmonies and rhythms of today, that suggest things to come. The name "Favorites" refers not only to the musicians, but to the music we love to play, the places we love to play and the people who come out to hear us play. So, sit back and get ready to experience a swinging novo hard-bop band that is sure to get you Movin’.
Some of Dr. Lamkin’s performance credits include performances with Eubie Blake, Stephanie Mills, Maurice Hynes, Frank Foster, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Cyrus Chestnut, Keter Betts, Ralph Peterson, Harvey Mason, the Manhattans, the Dells, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, and the African American Jazz Caucus Big Band. Locally Dr. Lamkin has performed with the Baltimore City Big Band under the direction of the late Eugene Walker, the Hank Levy Legacy Band, and with several Baltimore Luminaries including Mickey Fields, Jimmy Wells, Whitt Williams, Ethel Innis, and Ruby Glover.
Dr. Lamkin recorded his first album, titled “Hot.” In 2018 he released his second recording titled “Transitions,” and in March of this year he released his third recording titled “Movin’.” Currently Dr. Lamkin teaches private trumpet lessons at Bill's Music House and the Maryland Music Academy. He also is the trumpet and French horn coach at Maree G. Farring elementary/middle school and is the CEO of the “B-Sharp Summer Music Enrichment Academy” at Timothy Baptist Church for music students from age 8 to 18. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he leads and performs with his traditional post hard-bop group he calls the “Favorites Jazz Quintet,” and with his “Sacred Jazz Quintet.”
