Shoenberg / Drapkiin

Swinging night of Jazz Standards, Great American Song Book, Bossa Nova, and our favorite Ballads. Halley Shoenberg on sax & clarinet, with Christiana Drapkin on vocals, Harry Appelman on piano, Cyndy Elliott on bass, and Tony Martucci on drums.

From swinging standards to modern originals, Halley Shoenberg’s presentations have won the hearts of jazz enthusiasts in concert, festival and dance hall settings as well as audio and video recordings. She currently co-leads the Hot Club of DC which she has performed with since 2015. Besides performing with several Washington, DC/Baltimore groups, she leads her own "Halley Shoenberg Jazz Quintet” and smaller ensembles, her traditional New Orleans-style jazz “Halley’s Hot Gumbo Swingtet” band and her 11-piece 1920’s style “Revival Jazz Band.”

A multi-instrumentalist who plays clarinet, saxophone and flute, Shoenberg has produced three CD releases, Private Concert, Love Goes 'Round and Someday, which include several of her original compositions. In 2020-21 she hosted a concert series on her own front lawn and created several videos for her HalleyJazz YouTube channel. A native of Silver Spring, Maryland, Halley earned her Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University and Master's in Arts Administration from Florida State University.

Jazz vocalist Christiana Drapkin came to the US as a German Fulbright exchange student in theater at Tulane University in New Orleans, where she discovered the inner workings of musical theater and the roots of Jazz. She soon moved to New York City, where she grew into her artistic identity through her extensive jazz studies with Brooklyn pianist Charles Sibirsky. Christiana has developed a deep connection to the American Standards and Bebop repertoire. Drawing inspiration and technical skills from workshops with Mark Murphy, Sheila Jordan, and Tierney Sutton, she is known for her joyous scat and soaring improvisation lines, as well as for her highly personal delivery of lyrics.

In 2008, Christiana moved to the DC area and loves to work in the vibrant Jazz scene here. She is happy to return to Blues Alley, has performed on the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage, and in many other local venues.

Christiana has released three CDs: “Got The World On A String” released with guitarist Mike Gellar in 2008; "Songs About You" with her longtime teacher, Brooklyn pianist Charles Sibirsky in 2004; and "The Man I Love" in 1999.
