Thu Dec 4
Emy Tseng and Julie Mack met in their early days on the DC Brazilian and jazz scenes in 2010 and had many musical adventures together! This December they are delighted to reunite in Washington, DC at the iconic venue Mr. Henry’s for a night of swaying, propulsive Brazilian rhythms and swinging jazz, with an all-star band of amigos: Jon Ozment (piano), David Jernigan (bass, guitar), and Filipe Brandão de Paula (drums). Known for her joyful energy and audience connection, Julie Mack has been leading jazz groups and her Brazilian band Encantada in the Washington, DC area since 2008. While learning to swing with DC’s jazz heavyweights—early collaborators Wayne Wilentz, David Jernigan, and many more—Julie became enchanted with Brazilian music. Between gigs, she has drummed, danced, studied Portuguese, and traveled to Brazil for cultural immersion. Notable venues: Pangea (NYC, 2025); Jazz in the Garden Series, Omni Shoreham Hotel; Mid-Atlantic, Alexandria, and Takoma Park Jazz Festivals; Mr. Henry’s; Twins. Her CD The Sweetest Sounds features jazz and Brazilian music.
Seattle-based vocalist Emy Tseng blends Brazilian bossa nova, samba and jazz into a refined expressive sound. Her singing has earned praise from The Washington Post which highlighted her “fine rhythm, impressive grasp of harmony, and a clear, attractive voice.” She recorded her debut
album Sonho in DC with notable jazz musicians Wayne Wilentz, David Jernigan, Matvei Sigalov and the Lucini brothers. Emy plays percussion with Seattle’s vibrant samba group, VamoLá. A lifelong student of music, Emy has studied at the California Jazz Conservatory and Berklee College
of Music.
