Centered around the role of the lead trumpet, this program reflects Kevin Tzanetis’ artistic focus during his six years at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. Featuring music by Thad Jones, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane, the performance traces a lineage of big band and modern jazz through powerful, expressive playing.
Kevin Tzanetis is a jazz trumpeter originally from Fairfield, Connecticut, pursuing his master’s degree at the Peabody Institute, where he studies under Sean Jones. A deeply dedicated and expressive musician, he has built a reputation for his strong sound and commitment to pushing the boundaries of jazz.
His musical journey began under the mentorship of Jim Buchta, who he regards as his musical father, and was further shaped by Geoffrey Brookes, David DeJesus, and Nabaté Isles. He has performed with the Christian McBride Big Band and collaborated with artists including Jon Faddis, Warren Wolf, Tim Green, and Richard Johnson. He was also recognized by Wynton Marsalis at the Jack Rudin Jazz Championship.
During his time at Peabody, Kevin served as lead trumpet in the Peabody Jazz Ensemble, an experience that shaped his identity as a performer and bandleader. This performance marks his master’s recital, bringing together six years of study, mentorship, and artistic growth as he continues to develop his voice in the music.
