Mavis SWAN Poole & Jeremy "Bean" Clemons

The SwanBean Quintet: A Straight-Ahead Jazz Expression
Emerging from the vibrant jazz landscape of New York City, the SwanBean Quintet represents a compelling artistic venture led by two formidable talents: vocalist Mavis SWAN Poole and drummer Jeremy BEAN Clemons. This ensemble serves as a dedicated straight- ahead jazz alternate to their acclaimed genre-bending project, Soul Understated, offering a distinct exploration into the foundational elements of jazz tradition.

Mavis SWAN Poole, affectionately dubbed "Little Ella" by the legendary trombonist Curtis Fuller, is a vocalist, songwriter, and educator whose artistry transcends conventional boundaries. Renowned for her extraordinary ability to perform "multiphonics"—singing two or more notes simultaneously—Poole brings a unique depth to her interpretations. Her academic background includes a Magna Cum Laude degree from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and an MA in Music from Queens College, NYC. Throughout her illustrious career, she has shared stages with icons such as Lauryn Hill, Prince, After 7, and The Legendary Wailers, while also serving as a Vocal Jazz Professor at NCAT. Her fusion of R&B, jazz, and soul in other projects showcases her versatility, but within the SwanBean Quintet, her focus sharpens on pure jazz expression.

Jeremy BEAN Clemons, a dynamic drummer, composer, and producer hailing from St. Louis, MO, complements Poole's vocal prowess with his powerful and melodic rhythmic sensibilities. Clemons' early musical journey was shaped by his participation in the Royalaires Drum and Bugle Corps, founded by his grandmother, and the World Champion Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. He further honed his craft at NCCU, earning BM and BA degrees in Jazz Studies. His extensive performance history includes touring globally with the Andy Bey Quartet and serving as the drummer for reggae legend Burning Spear, as well as collaborating with electronic music guru DJ Carl Craig. Clemons' “merciless grooves” and intricate fills are a hallmark of his playing, providing a robust and swinging foundation for the quintet.
Together, Poole and Clemons co-lead Soul Understated, a band celebrated for its eclectic blend of soul, jazz, funk, and gospel, which has been described as instrumental in shaping a particular era of NYC's music scene. The SwanBean Quintet, however, carves out its own niche by deliberately focusing on the rich heritage of straight-ahead jazz. This project allows Poole and Clemons to delve into the improvisational freedom and intricate harmonies characteristic of classic jazz, showcasing their profound musicianship and deep respect for the genre's traditions. Formed in New York City, the quintet has made notable appearances at prestigious venues like Smalls Jazz Club, solidifying its presence in the city's vibrant jazz community as a testament to their unwavering commitment to authentic jazz artistry.
