Baltimore’s own L.A. Young returns to the city, where she has been performing since 2007, with her band Soul Society™. Young is recognized for her rare, dark contralto, a low female register that is seldom heard in live performance. LA. Young and Soul Society™ shape each performance around the room, the audience, and the music, creating a live experience rooted in soul, R&B, jazz, and blues.
In 2018, Young received three Maryland Music Awards nominations for Best Jazz Artist, Best Funk Artist, and Music Icon Award. She has appeared four times at the Jazz Legacy Foundation Gala, sharing the stage with leading performers from the jazz and soul communities. Young’s Phyllis Hyman tribute sold out a three night run at Anacostia Playhouse and has also been presented at City Winery for three consecutive years.
