Swingin' into the New Year with Afro Carib Concepts with Joel Santiago on drums, Obasi Akoto on bass, Theljon Allen on Trumpet, and Bienvenido Dinsey on keys. This group explores Afro Caribbean concepts within a modern interpretation. Together they blend diverse and unique styles of jazz and world music. Taking us on a journey to Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and different regions in the continent of Africa, opening these rhythms up for improvisational expression and individual exploration.
Joel Santiago is a recording and performing artist, bandleader, producer, and songwriter/composer. With a dedication to drums and percussion, he was introduced to music at a very early age and became prevalent in the new-generation jazz scene in the DC metropolitan area by the age of 16. Joel has studied under John Zidar, Francis Thompson, Fish Howard, and Masaga Wolf. He has also pursued advanced percussion studies under the likes of Carlos Caro, Hector "Coco" Barez, Alfredo Mojica, and René Ibanez. He is a resident artist for Latin Jazz at Bar Vasquez, and an ambassador for Afro Caribbean expression and evolution in this area. Above all things, Joel has embraced been a life-long, and real-time student of this music and culture.
