Elijah Jamal Balbed is a 2x WAMMIE Award-Winning multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer, arranger, educator and organizer. A native of Washington, DC and Howard University alum, Elijah has made a name for himself as one of the top Jazz artists of his generation.
Reviving The Kaleidoscope Jazz Orchestra is the most recent of Elijah's many projects. He brings the orchestra into a new era by uniting musicians from the original band with newer players who have not performed with the group before, all while keeping the great tradition of big band music alive.
Founded in 1979, The Kaleidoscope Jazz Orchestra is one of the longest-running big bands in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The orchestra performed regularly and rehearsed monthly for 41 consecutive years until 2020, when the pandemic halted all live music -- especially big bands. In 2026, the orchestra's director since 2003 Ann Marlowe passed the torch to bandleader and DC jazz stalwart (and Kaleidoscope alum!) Elijah Jamal Balbed. Elijah is the orchestra's 5th ever director, bringing Kaleidoscope into a new era.
