Washington Heights Jazz Festival
Le Cheile. 839 W 181st St
New York NY 10033
Saturday, November 7, 11AM
Join Louise Rogers and friends for an interactive performance incorporating music, dance, and storytelling, for children ages 2 – 6 and their families. This year we’ll be celebrating the centennials of jazz greats John Coltrane and Miles Davis! Come swing the ABC’s in John Coltrane style and make sweet music with the phrase “So What” as Miles Davis so beautifully did. Get ready to tap your feet and learn some tap dancing moves as we stomp to the beat. And, it wouldn’t be the Washington Heights Jazz Festival without the annual performance of “The Three Jazzy Pigs”
Louise has been a teacher and Music Specialist at the Medical Center Nursery School since 1999, where she has produced a two-week jazz festival - bringing NYC jazz musicians to the school for live performances – since 2008. She was named a 2021 “Jazz Hero” by the Jazz Journalists Association for her years of work promoting jazz in Washington Heights.
Jazz critic and historian Nat Hentoff praised Louise as “the most joyously encouraging way of expanding the audience for jazz”. Louise is a published author with Alfred Publishing: Jazzy Fairy Tales Vols I & II; Jazz Mosaic; Together We Can Improvise Vols I & II.
She recently published her first children’s book, “Miles Davis Was His Name – So What”, with illustrator Frances Hsueh.
