Stories of women composers & their music
Erica Sipes, piano
Virginia-based pianist, Erica Sipes, presents a program of music composed by women from around the globe throughout the past 300 years. Along with works by Marianna Martines, Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Germaine Tailleferre, Melanie Bonis, Lili Boulanger, Anna von Schaden, Dora Pejacevic, and Madeleine Dring, she’ll share stories and tidbits about these women, many of whom are just now having their music heard by a wider audience thanks to scores finally being made more accessible and to the network of colleagues who have been working together to let these women's voices soar.
Erica Ann Sipes is known for creating performances that are both musically compelling and deeply human. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, she serves as staff pianist and resident practice and performance coach at Radford University and has collaborated with musicians across the United States. She is a founding member of the Roanoke-based Alma Ensemble and co-creator of the YouTube channel Piano Music She Wrote, both dedicated to amplifying music composed by women.
In addition to performing as a soloist and chamber musician, she is a frequent performer with the Roanoke Symphony, Roanoke Symphony Choir, and Opera Roanoke. This past season she performed as a soloist with the Virginia Tech Philharmonic, giving the US premiere of one of Anna von Schaden's piano concertos, and also performed Mozart's triple piano concerto with the Roanoke Symphony.
Erica works internationally as a practice, sight reading, and performance coach and she is regularly invited to lead workshops that reflect her passion for performance, education, and accessibility in music.
