Legendary saxophonist Paul Carr leads the Howard University Jazz Ensemble in his debut season as Director, following Fred Irby’s remarkable 51-year tenure. The Ensemble will present traditional big band classics, contemporary arrangements, and a special tribute celebrating the centennials of Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
The Howard University Jazz Ensemble (HUJE), based at Howard University, is one of the nation’s premier collegiate jazz ensembles, recognized for its tradition of excellence, innovation, and commitment to preserving the legacy of jazz. Established in the late 1960s as part of Howard University’s growing commitment to jazz education, the ensemble has played an important role in shaping generations of outstanding musicians while contributing to the broader cultural landscape of Washington, DC and beyond.
For more than five decades, the ensemble was led by legendary trumpeter and educator Fred Irby III, whose remarkable 51-year tenure elevated the ensemble to national prominence. Under his leadership, the Howard University Jazz Ensemble developed a reputation for musical excellence, stylistic authenticity, and a strong commitment to honoring the traditions of jazz while nurturing emerging talent.
Now under the direction of acclaimed saxophonist, educator, and producer Paul Carr, the Howard University Jazz Ensemble continues its tradition of excellence. The ensemble performs a diverse repertoire ranging from classic big band works by jazz masters to contemporary compositions and original student arrangements, reflecting both the rich heritage and evolving future of jazz.
Comprised of some of Howard University’s most talented student musicians, HUJE provides a professional-level performance experience while preparing the next generation of artists, educators, and cultural leaders. Through its performances, recordings, and outreach, the Howard University Jazz Ensemble continues to honor jazz tradition, celebrate innovation, and uphold Howard University’s longstanding role as a vital force in the development of American music.
