To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Willie Nelson’s first single in 1956 and the publication of Geoffrey Himes’s new book, “Willie Nelson: All the Albums—The Stories Behind the Music,” the Roots Café presents “A Tribute to Willie Nelson” with Karen Collins, Doug Stevenson and Himes singing songs made famous by Nelson and songs the performers wrote under Nelson’s influence. A book signing will follow the show.
Karen Collins grew up in the mountains of Southwest Virginia in a coal mining community where she spent a lot of time listening to country music on the radio and singing in the local Baptist Church. The echoes of those early country sounds stand out in her singing and her song writing, written and delivered in that classic country style on topics ranging from love and heartbreak to being stuck in traffic. Karen is lead singer with the honky-tonk country Backroads Band and the Cajun/Zydeco Squeeze Bayou Band. She also sings in an acoustic country quartet and plays as a duo with guitar player, Ira Gitlin. She has won multiple Wammies (Washington Area Music Awards) for “Country Vocalist”, “Country Duo/Group” (for the Backroads Band) and “Country Recording”. Karen and the Backroads Band have recorded three CDs of her original music, 'smost recently 2023 "Daddy Can I Use The Car.” https://karenbackroadsband.com
Doug Stevenson is the singer, songwriter and guitarist for Doug Stevenson & the Spades, a Baltimore/Washington combo that plays American music. Country & western is the main ingredient, with blues, jazz, swing, bluegrass, rockabilly, and rock ‘n roll flavoring the gumbo. Before founding the Spades in 2012, he led the rock band Raised By Wolves and was featured in the alt-country band Hooverville. Since relocating to Baltimore, his hometown, he has performed in theatrical shows at the Baltimore Theatre Project, Fells Point Corner Theatre, and with local groups. Doug’s songs have been honored several times by the annual Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. Visit his website.
Though best known as a music critic for the Washington Post, American Songwriter, Nashville Scene, Jazz Times, No Depression, Paste and more, Geoffrey Himes is also a longtime singer-songwriter who has co-written songs with Si Kahn, Fred Koller, Walter Egan, Sonia Rutstein, Billy Kemp, Stephen Wade, Jim Patton, Tony Denikos, James von Lenz, Jennifer Keith, Andrew Grimm and others. His songs have been recorded by Kemp, the Kinsey Report, Denikos, Koller, Mojo Filter, Patton and others. His book, “In-Law Country: How Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash and Their Circle Fashioned a New Kind of Country Music,” was published by the Country Music Hall of Fame last winter. “Fables from Italy and Beyond,” his book of collaborative poems with Maryland Poet Laureate Grace Cavalieri, was published last summer. His newest book, “Willie Nelson; The Stories Behind the Music,” was published in October. http://www.facebook.com/RootsCafeBaltimore
