Roz White honors the inimitable music legend Roberta Flack with songs and storytelling from her iconic “First Take “ album, recorded at Mr. Henry’s on Capitol Hill.
The amazing Roberta Flack is considered by many to be one of the greatest songstresses of all time. She began her career here in Washington DC and had a regular gig at Mr. Henry’s on Capitol Hill. Her songs brought insight into our lives, loves, culture and politics, while she effortlessly traversed a broad musical landscape from pop to soul to folk to jazz. She is the only solo artist to win the GRAMMY Award Record of the Year for two consecutive years. Most of all, she had a superlative ability to tell a story through her music.
As a singer-actress, Roz has created a career full of award winning storytelling, portraying many iconic singers and music styles from Pearl Bailey to Mahalia Jackson, recently taking a star turn as Billie Holiday at Mosaic Theater Company. The piece “Roberta’s First Take” was conceived by Roz White and first produced by the Alliance for New Music Theatre at the Arts Club of Washington in December 2024. The script, written by Steven A. Butter Jr and directed by Courtney Baker Oliver takes audiences to Mr Henry’s on Capitol Hill, the place where Roberta Flack made her earliest recordings, and claimed her place in music history as a prodigy turned soul superstar.
