Members of the Baltimore music community need our help. Tinku Bhattacharyya is the wife of pianist and professor Marc Cary. On Oct. 12, Tinku suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and was immediately taken to the hospital, where she has undergone several operations. She spent 11 days in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit before being moved to the Intermediate Care Unit where she is currently being stabilized and prepped for Acute Rehabilitation.
Tinku lost a large portion of her right side mobility. She will need extensive physical therapy become self-sufficient again and proceed through daily activities without the need for assistance from another person and/or assistive equipment.
Funds are needed to help cover expenses that include hospital stays, rehabilitation, living expenses, and more.
Marc has been by her side every day, coordinating communication with hospital staff, managing logistics, and trying to keep Tinku's business afloat during this incredibly difficult time. Funds raised will ensure that he is able to continue to be a point person for Tinku as she works through her recovery. Both are unable to work at the moment.
Tinku has spent the last 20+ years in artist management, playing an integral role in bringing some of the most influential artists' visions to fruition on the global live stage and recorded music. She's supprted musicians such as WeAreKing, Amp Fiddler, Marc Cary, Gary Bartz, Rakim, Shuggie Otis, and so many more. She has done incredible work on the rights management side of the business with Maceo Parker, Reggie Workman, Roy Ayers, and more. Tinku has supported the Baltimore artist community and beyond as the Performance Director at Creative Alliance Arts Center. Over the last nearly 10 years, Tinku has also highlighted the upcoming generation of musicians through events produced with the Harlem Sessions and records released through Intrinsic Artists and Session Heads United.
Next Steps in Her Care:
After Tinku is stabilized in the Intermediate Care Unit she will be moved into acute rehab for up to 21 days before moving to a sub-acute rehab facility for a short period. When she is strong enough, Tinku will move home for home care. As she works to heal and goes through PT, Marc will prepare their home by acquiring and installing equipment, such as a ramp for her wheelchair and/or walker, a specialzed bed, grab bars and safety equipment. Once a plan has been formalized with her doctors, the family will have a better understanding of what will be needed, and what insurance will cover vs. out of pocket.
