The Funk of Our Fathers is an interactive edutainment series led by multi-instrumentalist Samuel Prather and his acclaimed ensemble. This project is a celebration and education on the rich, complex history of Black music tying together the legacies of Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, James Brown, Roy Ayers and more. This show explores its journey from West African rhythms to modern-day genres like funk, hip-hop, jazz, and neo-soul. By combining dynamic, live musical performances with engaging historical narration, the program aims to build cultural bridges and inspire the next generation of musical innovators."
Samuel Prather is an exciting and multifaceted pianist, drummer, and vocalist born and raised in Washington DC. Sam has developed a reputation in the local music scene performing and producing with all types of acts. He has shared the stage with Hugh Masekela, Cyrus Chestnut, Pharoh Saunders, and Bennie Maupin. Sam studied with Lafayette Gilcrest, Allyn Johnson, Charlie Young, and Charles Covington on his way to finishing the graduate program at Howard University. He won a student downbeat award in 2012 for his work with the Howard University Jazz Ensemble and currently leads his own critically acclaimed ensembles.
