Meet the Tri-Tones! – Three young talented singers on the DMV jazz scene.
Ella Kushins is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist from Northern California. She grew up studying classical piano and was in a pop/rock band in high school. She recently released two studio albums of original work in singer-songwriter/folk/rock genres. Ella is currently a rising Junior studying jazz as a music minor at The George Washington University with jazz vocal master Barry Moton.
Caroline Whichard is a DMV-based vocalist with a BA in Music Technology from George Mason University. She trained for 3 years with Darden Purcell, Director of Jazz Studies at GMU, and sang with the Mason Jazz Vocal Ensemble for 4 years, performing as a group at conferences in Virginia, Florida, and New Orleans. Upon graduating, she has established herself as a gigging musician alongside her partner, guitarist Alejandro, with current weekly residencies at Bonne Vie and Eatopia Eatery in D.C. and Oasis The Listening Bar in Arlington, VA.
Hyma Gollakota is a vocalist who recently graduated from George Washington University with an MS in Environmental Science. Her training is rooted in Carnatic Sangeetham, which she has been pursuing since the age of 4. She completed her first solo concert in 2022 and has since been working to translate those skills to the art of Jazz singing. She sees the parallels between improvisation in Jazz and showcasing a Raga in Carnatic music.
Backing up the Tri-Tones will be the not so young but still kickin’ it Rob Orwin Trio:
With Rob Orwin on keys, Seth Greenstein on bass, and Paul Salfi on drums. The trio has performed all over town and are regulars at Mr. Henry’s, most recently with vocalists Sarah Laven Jones and Lanah Koelle.
