Spike Wilner

“Surging and rhythmically powerful”— The New York Times

"Buoyant swing and pugnacious modernism" Downbeat

Jazz pianist Spike Wilner plays an oversized role in the worldwide jazz scene, from   holding up the jazz heavens in the West Village during the pandemic, to presenting the world of jazz on a nightly basis at his two jazz clubs, Smalls and Mezzrow.

Spike has performed with or led bands in New York City at countlessjazz venues including The Village Gate, The Angry Squire, Visiones, Augies, The West End Gate and The Village Corner. Spike also toured with The Artie Shaw Big Band, The Glen Miller Orchestra and Maynard Furgeson. Spike's own recordings include "A Blues of Many Colors", "Planet Jazz", and "Three To Go". Spike launched the record label SmallsLIVE focusing on great performances at Smalls Jazz Club. Spike’s own project, "Spike Wilner, Solo Piano: Live At Smalls", received a glowing review in The New York Times.

Please join Spike for a reception following the concert.

The PianoJazz DC series has presented over 40 major jazz pianists in solo concert since 2014.  View the  Archival Mini-Doc.  The series represents an overview of the worldwide jazz scene from the viewpoint of its most gifted pianists.  Burnett Thompson, Founder and Artistic Director.
