BRAHMS: A GERMAN REQUIEM

Sunday, March 7, 2027, 3:00pm

In 1871, London heard Brahms's A German Requiem for the first time in a private drawing room; the composer's own arrangement for piano four-hands, played by Lady Thompson and Cipriani Potter for whoever could fit in the room. That is the version we are singing. Brahms set aside the mass for the dead and chose his own words of comfort instead: Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. With no orchestra between you and the singing, this is the Requiem at conversational distance. Come and sit close.
