Seven extraordinary musicians. One intimate room.
No particular interest in behaving according to genre.
On the Saturday before Halloween, GALLIMAUFRY: OMFUG in Baltimore brings together seven world-class performers for a singular afternoon at An die Musik Live—Baltimore’s famously intimate listening room and a venue more often associated with jazz than with musicians bearing oboes, horns, flutes and other implements of the concert hall.
That is precisely the point.
Gallimaufry is an old word for a marvelous jumble: a heterogeneous mixture, a collection of disparate things thrown together. Here, it describes an afternoon in which the usual borders between concert music, experimentalism, jazz, funk, theatricality and the frankly unclassifiable are cheerfully ignored.
The players—Shelagh Abate, horn; Elizabeth England, oboe; Jennifer Bill, saxophone; Jonah Kapraff and Olivia Malin, trumpets; Katie Valadez, flute; and Matthew Wright, trombone—come from the upper ranks of the professional music world, with careers spanning symphony orchestras, ballet and Broadway, alongside faculty appointments at institutions including Boston University, Peabody Conservatory and Berklee College of Music.
For one afternoon, they assemble not as an orchestra, a brass ensemble, a chamber group or a jazz band, but simply as musicians with something interesting to say.
The program moves from the hypnotic and disorienting world of Afarin Mansouri’s Bewildered for solo horn to the amplified, media-saturated virtuosity of JacobTV’s Billie for saxophone and the evocative soundscape of Hilary Tann’s Like Lightnings. Individual players step into the spotlight throughout the afternoon before the whole unruly company converges in funk- and jazz-inflected arrangements by Cam Millar.
The result is part recital, part cabaret, part musical laboratory—and perhaps, this close to Halloween and in Edgar Allan Poe’s Baltimore, just a little séance.
The subtitle OMFUG borrows some downtown New York mischief: Other Music for Uplifting Gourmandizers, a phrase famously associated with the punk-era CBGB & OMFUG and its appetite for music that resisted tidy classification. GALLIMAUFRY takes that appetite somewhere entirely different: into the hands of seven musicians whose formidable classical training gives them the freedom to wander well outside its boundaries.
No crossover required. There is no border to cross.
Just exceptional musicians, strange and wonderful music, a room built for listening, and an October afternoon in a city that has always understood the beauty of the unconventional.
