The music of the band Inscape is heavily influenced by John Coltrane’s style of modal jazz, developed in the early to mid-1960s. The band and their identity evolved as a result of collaboration between pianist Greg Murphy, bassist Joris Teepe, (former members of the legendary Rashied Ali Quintet), tenor saxophonist Mark Shim (known for his work with Betty Carter, Terrence Blanchard & Vijay Iyer), and drummer Alvester Garnett (known for his association with Regina Carter & Clark Terry).

Greg Murphy – From Chicago roots to New York jazz royalty, Greg Murphy has carved a path through the world of music, bridging generations with innovation and fearless creativity. A longtime collaborator with Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali, Greg has shared stages with everyone from Ornette Coleman to Carlos Santana. His piano work spans continents and styles, earning him two #1 JazzWeek albums—Bright Idea (2019) and Snap Happy (2025)—plus an Oscar-nominated soundtrack credit. With grooves that stretch from classic to cutting-edge, Greg remains a vital voice in modern jazz. http://gregmurphyjazz.com

Joris Teepe – a distinguished Dutch jazz bassist, composer and arranger. He has collaborated with artists such as Joey Berkley, Ron Jackson, Darrell Grant, Antonio Ciacca, Mathilde Santing, Deborah Brown, and Fay Claassen. He was a long-time member of the Rashied Ali Band. Joris is also an active academic educator: He is head of the jazz department at the Prins Claus Conservatory in Groningen and a faculty member at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

Mark Shim – an outstanding jazz tenor saxophonist. Over the course of his 20-year career, he has recorded three albums for the prestigious Blue Note label, including the critically acclaimed Turbulent Flow. He has toured extensively with legendary drummer Elvin Jones, and performed with many other respected and influential artists such as Terence Blanchard, David Murray, The Mingus Big Band, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ignacio Berroa, Dave Douglas, and Vijay Iyer.

Alvester Garnett – a highly respected jazz drummer from New York City, originally from Richmond, VA. His musical journey began with tap dance and piano before focusing on percussion at age 14. Mentored by Ellis Marsalis, he developed a deep appreciation for jazz drumming legends such as Max Roach and Elvin Jones. After earning a degree in Jazz Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, he moved to New York in 1993 and began performing with iconic artists like Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, Regina Carter, James Carter, Cyrus Chestnut, Wynton Marsalis, and Pharoah Sanders. Known for energetic and expressive playing, Garnett is also a passionate educator at Montclair State University and workswith youth programs like Jazz House Kids and NJPAC’s Jazz for Teens.
