Miles Davis’s 1949 Nonet album Birth of the Cool grew out of his discussions and work with Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan to move jazz beyond swing and bop to more subtle and evocative sounds. Our show presents music from this period, and from his pioneering work with other greats over the next decade.
The Bob Schwartz Quintet features Joe Brotherton, who needs no introduction at Mr. Henry’s. The Quartet and Quintet have played throughout the DMV for 18 years. In 2015 Mike West wrote in the City Paper:
“BSQ, the Bob Schwartz Quartet, has been holding down a biweekly gig at Twins Jazz for a couple of months now. And why not? The only thing more reliable than his gig is his swing. *** Two albums, a whole lot of elegant, straight-ahead jazz. *** His improvisation has the feeling of a lively raconteur, spinning yarns with witty asides and amusing details. *** ”
