Dan Wallace: Saxophone
Bob Butta: Piano
Shawn Simon: Upright Bass
Frank Russo: Drumset
Dan Wallace is a Baltimore based saxophone player who has been building his reputation for over a decade. Wallace has assembled a team of musicians with whom he's a long association. Through standard jazz tunes they will really explore what this music can do.
How did this group form?
Frank Russo was a 2006 Maryland Summer Jazz Camp instructor, which Dan attended while he was still in high school. Frank introduced Dan to the concept of poly rhythms as used in swing based music. Years later, they met again through mutual friends and their professional relationship playing together developed. Frank brings feel good vibes and excitement. Both Dan and Frank love the drumming of Elvin Jones, which is reflected in their musical interactions.
When Dan was a child he was told about Bob Butta. Bob was a Baltimore legend and every professional in Dan's life would refer to him that way. Dan's teachers would say, "If you have the money and you want your music to sound good, call Bob Butta." And that's exactly what Dan did. Dan gratefully received "on the bandstand" instruction and guidance from Bob throughout their professional relationship. Rather than explaining things in words, Bob would just play in a way that was so clear and concise that Dan would learn tunes or concepts by listening and reacting or mimicking. To this day these were some of the most important musical interactions Dan has had.
Shawn Simon and Dan are contemporaries and their careers grew in parallel for quite a while. During the years when the did not play together often, they relished the chances that they could. In addition to being friends, Dan's and Shawn's dogs are friends, as well!
Bob, Frank and Shawn have a regular working trio, and Dan hired them as a unit for his upcoming album to be recorded this fall.
