Afina-Dos Jazz Duo

Dani Toralla is a graceful, agile, and creative singer, songwriter and educator from Guatemala City, currently based in Dallas. Her versatility in diverse genres including bossa nova, swing, and bolero has led her to a distinguished international career as a performing and recording artist In 2022, she toured Nicaragua for the 10th “Festival del Bolero.” She is known for her skill in wordless vocals and can be heard entertaining audiences by emulating instruments ranging from the trumpet to the timbal.

Described as “extraordinarily talented” by Houston Public Media, Tomás Jonsson is a highly sought-after pianist and composer based in Baltimore. He is known for his ability to perform with any lineup, in any genre, for any audience. In May of 2023, Tomás won 1st Place at the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition. In February 2024, Tomás won 2nd Place (and Best Jazz Ballad) at the UNISA International Jazz Piano Competition in Pretoria, South Africa. In August 2025, Tomás won 1st Place at the Rubato International Jazz Piano Competition. Tomás has performed or recorded with celebrated artists including Benny Benack III, Ulysses Owens, Jr., Reuben Rogers, Caity Gyorgy, and Nick Finzer.

In 2022, Tomás and Dani met while pursuing their master’s degrees at the University of North Texas. They instantly bonded over their affinity for Brazilian jazz and discovered they had an uncanny musical connection. A Spotify Blend playlist showed them that while their musical instincts lined up around 98% of the time, they had sharp disagreements on the remaining 2%. Inspired by this revelation, they recorded their duo EP, “Two Percent.” This 2% difference sparks artistic tension that makes their performances exciting and keeps them and their audiences on their toes. Their collaboration won them a 2024 Downbeat SMA for Outstanding Latin Group Performance. Tomás and Dani, known as Afina-Dos performed around Guatemala for the March 2025 for the IGA Guatemala Jazz Festival.
