Pianist Ryan Hanseler featuring Gabrielle Cavassa. Nazir Ebo on drums, Lex Warshawsky on Bass, Ryan Hanseler on piano and Blue Note vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa
Pianist Ryan Hanseler has performed as a sideman with artists including Branford Marsalis, Herlin Riley, Wessel Anderson, Delfeayo Marsalis, Adonis Rose, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jason Marsalis, Jazzmeia Horn, Cyrille Aimee, Wycliffe Gordon, Gabrielle Cavassa and more.
Getting his first break at twenty three years old, Ryan began subbing in saxophonist Branford Marsalis’s quartet for his (Ryan’s) teacher and mentor, pianist Joey Calderazzo. Shortly after, Marsalis began a traditional New Orleans septet which Ryan immediately became an integral part of. The short-lived group only performed around ten shows before it ended.
From an early age, Ryan Hanseler found steady work in various big bands, including those of Jon Brown, Delfeayo Marsalis, Adonis Rose, and his current endeavor, the US Navy Commodores Big Band. By his early thirties, Ryan became the pianist for both Delfeayo Marsalis’s Uptown Jazz Orchestra, as well as the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. He remained a member of each group, performing steadily for three and five years, respectively.
At the same time he was working in big bands, Ryan also worked as a side man in various small groups, as well as leading his own band. One of Ryan’s most successful groups was his Trio which frequently featured Blue Note recording artist, vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa. Working with Cavassa in the capacity of both a leader and a sideman, they managed a five year run working together, including international tours, recordings, and steady local performances in the city of New Orleans.
In the studio, Ryan has recorded with a handful of artists including those whose bands he frequently worked in, including Adonis Rose, Delfeayo Marsalis, Cyrille Aimee, and Gabrielle Cavassa. Under his own name, he has released two albums, one which received the Off Beat Top 50 award in New Orleans. The second was a duo album featuring friends and mentors Leroy Jones, Nicholas Payton, Doyle Cooper, Ricardo Pascal and Ashlin Parker. His soon to be released trio record features drummer Jason Marsalis and bassist William Ledbetter.
Ryan is a proud graduate of North Carolina Central University where he studied under the guidance of Dr.Ira Wiggins and Joey Calderazzo.
