Justin Lees Jazz Trio

Justin Lees, guitar
Dominic Smith, drums
Peter Revell, bass

Justin Lees started playing guitar professionally in the late 70’s and studied with prominent Washington DC area guitarists Rick Whitehead, Paul Bollenbach, Bill Biesecker and Danny Gatton, and not-so-local guitarists Herb Ellis and Emily Remler. Although stylistically diverse, Justin's main focus is on a straight ahead approach to jazz steeped in the fifties tradition of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and rooted in the styles of Charlie Christian and T Bone Walker. The feeling of Swing and the Blues is a constant.

He studied seriously with Howard Alden, Michele Ramo and Dr. Asher Zlotnik. He opened for Nina Simone as a member of the Ron Holloway Group at Constitution Hall. In addition to his own solo, duo, and trio projects, projects included pianist John Colianni's Quintet and Jazz Orchstra. Lees also plays with the Gypsy Jazz Phenomenon Franglais. www.justinleesjazz

Maryland-raised drummer Dominic Smith has been a fixture on the local jazz scene for more than 20 years. His hard swinging style, use of dynamics and innovative rhythmic subtleties have been utilized by such jazz notables as Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, James Williams, Charlie Byrd, Phil Woods, Gary Thomas, Jim Snidero, Kenny Rankin, Dennis Irwin, Ray Bryant, Keter Betts and Charles McPherson and George Garzone.

Since 2006 Dominic has been a member of The Unified Jazz Ensemble, performing with them every Tuesday 49 West in Annapolis and many other local and national venues. He performs with local musicians and backs up many national artists, performing more than 320 gigs a year, while still fitting in students at his home teaching studio. His local drum guru was the late genius drummer Mike Smith.

Boston-born Peter Revell has been a bassist on the DC and Baltimore scene since the early 90’s, studying with the great Steve Novosel while still in college. Until his retirement from the Navy in late 2021, he was a bassist in the US Navy Band for 26 years, serving in both the Commodores Jazz Ensemble and the Sea Chanters Chorus.

In and out of the Navy he played with and shared the stage with a long list of great artists from both the local and national jazz scenes, playing great jazz in every state but Alaska, and being featured at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Detroit and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Since military retirement, he’s also been involved with the theatre, playing electric bass for the world premiere of the Broadway show Once Upon a One More Time and he was recently selected for a staging of Evita in Washington, DC.
