Lamar Gaines Sr.
Longtime Cleveland Jazz Fans will never forget seeing Lamar Gaines and Deliverance, a jazz trio that played at the Boarding House in University Circle every Friday night for decades between the 1970's and the 1990's. Gaines, an acoustic bassist was a Cleveland Jazz legend, whose career dated back to the late 1940's, early 1950's and included performances at Leo's Casino, the Theatrical Grille on Short Vincent, and many other top Cleveland jazz clubs. He backed many visiting artists to the Cleveland area including Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Teddy Wilson, and many others. In addition to being a talented acoustic bassist, Lamar Gaines was also a highly skilled pianist.
Lamar was a mentor to several famous Cleveland jazz musicians, including Joe Lovano, Greg Bandy, Vanessa Rubin, Lafayette Carthon, Robert Hubbard, and his two highly accomplished sons, Lamar Gaines Jr., and Will Gaines. Over the years his Trio featured a who's who of Cleveland Jazz Musicians including Ace Carter, Skip Gibson, David Thomas, Kermit Walker, Lafayette Carthon, Mike Petrone, Joe Hunter, and many others. Along with contemporaries like Bill Gidney, Neal Creque and Chink Stevenson, who were also regulars at the Boarding House, Lamar Gaines Sr. formed the backbone of Jazz in Cleveland from the late 1940's all the way into the 2000's.
