M. Alex Ramírez is a Colombian-born jazz saxophonist, composer, and producer based in New York City, widely recognized as a "young jazz phenomenon" and one of the most impressive alto players of his generation. His singular musical vision bridges deep cultural roots with an expansive, forward-thinking sonic landscape. Having immigrated to the United States at an early age when his father took a position with NASA, Ramírez quickly developed a lifelong, twin obsession with music and astronomy—initially exploring piano at age four before discovering his defining voice on the saxophone.
After a competitive upbringing in arts academies and studying under Gary Keller at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Ramírez was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music. During his formative years there, he performed with the flagship Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, touring the New England circuit and sharing the stage with jazz titans including Terrence Blanchard, Paquito D’Rivera, Bill Frisell, and Gary Burton. He later relocated to New York City to accept a graduate scholarship at NYU Steinhardt, refining his voice alongside modern masters Chris Potter and Alex Sipiagin. Upon graduating, his exceptional musicianship earned him the Barney Josephson Outstanding Graduate Jazz Studies Award, alongside securing 3rd place in the prestigious Carinthian International Jazz Award.
Now a vital force on the contemporary jazz scene, Ramírez’s evolution as a bandleader has culminated in his most ambitious project to date: the daring, chordless trio album “Nebulesque” (Adhyâropa Records). Hailed for performance execution reminiscent of a young Kenny Garrett, Nebulesque translates complex scientific phenomena—from solar ejections to massive black holes—into a sweeping exploration of space, time, and human emotion. Balancing his cosmic exploratory work with deeply grounded heritage, Ramírez acts as a frequent key collaborator for the acclaimed Afro-Colombian ensemble Grupo Rebolú. Anchoring the group on saxophone, backing vocals, and guacharaca, he has performed at some of the world's most prestigious cultural institutions, including major concert series at Lincoln Center, and was featured in Rebolu's high-energy NPR Tiny Desk x globalFEST performance. Reaching squarely for the stars while honoring his roots, Ramírez continues to push the boundaries of modern improvised music alongside current mentors Ben Wendel, Melissa Aldana, and Arturo O’Farrill.
