Trombonist Roland Barber has performed with a diverse and world class list of musicians, including Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Lauren Daigle, Keb' Mo, La India, Manny Oquendo y Libre, Chaka Khan, Wynton Marsalis and the JLCO, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and the NBC Saturday Night Live Band. He is known for vivid, soulful performances that cross many styles. Roland moves inside the tradition in ways that go back to Louis Armstrong, Basie and Ellington while also moving forward in modern directions put forth by Steve Turre and J.J.Johnson. Also, Roland is one of the few to master the plunger-mute - an approach that creates a talking effect and broadens out the communication of the music! Roland has performed in venues including Carnegie Hall, Birdland, the Blue Note, Lincoln Center, the Copacabana, and Madison Square Garden. He has appeared on television, including NBC's Saturday Night Live, CBS' Today Show and ESPN Awards.
Roland is excited to premier this quintet in particular! Joining Barber on the front line will be iconic jazz saxophonist Greg Tardy, who came to prominence with Elvin Jones' band in the mid 90's. Tardy has since become a mainstay on the list of voices that are defining the direction of both jazz and saxophone playing. Audiences can expect to hear a few standards, a few choice gems from the Great American Songbook, as well as original music featuring the ensemble.
On drums, enjoy the young phenom Joshua Cook, who is making waves on the Nashville Jazz Scene. Known for a unique blend of finesse and fire that speaks of masters like "Hutch", "Tain" and "Tank", Cook has a bright future ahead.
On keys, you'll hear the work of Clay Perry - and chances are you've heard him before, even if you didn't know it! Clay is a leading producer, and has had a hand in the music of artists such as Julio Iglesias, Christina Aguilera, Jaci Velasquez, and more. Behind those scenes, Clay is a gifted jazz pianist possessing an aware, lyrical touch, a keen wit for development and an understated yet compelling intensity.
