Dante’ Pope is a multi-genre, multi-disciplinary, international touring percussionist and vocalist born and raised on the west side of Chicago. His eclectic style is a pure reflection of the diverse influences he garnered while playing in the church in Austin and North Lawndale and his formal training at the Merit School of Music, downtown Chicago. While majoring in Political Science at Fisk University, he toured the country with the world renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers. His dedication to service led him to our Nation's Capitol, where he served as Legislative Assistant for Congressman Danny K. Davis of the 7th Congressional District of Illinois from 2007-2012 and then took the leap to leave the halls of Congress for the stage.
Since his time in the world of politics, he has toured with a variety of artists across genres. Dante’ toured with GRAMMY award-winning artist Dom Flemons and was a collaborator on his GRAMMY nominated project, Black Cowboys. He served as Music Director for soul vocalist Raheem DeVaughn and lyricist Wes Felton’s project The Crossrhodes featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series. Most recently, he was a member of two-time GRAMMY award-winning group, Old Crow Medicine Show as featured percussionist, vocalist and pianist. The international touring group performed across the country and in the UK. Performances with the likes of Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., playing the Grand Ole Opry quarterly and the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville over Dante's 2 years of collaboration were true highlights.
The new single,“Proof,” comes after a slight hiatus from his solo career given his love for collaboration.“Proof,” was birthed out of a longing to put all his influences ina bottle; gospel, spirituals, blues, soul and jazz. The song is akin to the nuance of the great Bill Withers, mixed with Delta blues guitar riffs as a n od to his families roots in North Delta Mississippi. He notes, "The lyrics serve as an open letter to our consciousness in remembering what we’ve overcome while questioning the possibility of a hopeful future “ Unlike his debut release, ‘After 5 Music,” and most recent release, “Whisper,” he has stepped away from the drums and uses the vocals as the foundational pulse of the track. A true singer songwriter feel, with a soulful twist.
