The Baron Tymas Quartet brings together four exciting musicians, all connected to the powerhouse NCCU Jazz Program, to create a sound that feels both timeless and urgently alive. Guitar, vibraphone, bass, and drums form a lineup built for color, groove, and conversation. The band moves easily from swing to modern textures to earthy, rootsy stretches while staying grounded in deep listening and deep time. No showboating, just music with purpose, pulse, and joy.
Baron Tymas, originally from Washington, DC, has carried his guitar to stages across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. Now a major creative voice in the Triangle, he plays with warmth, clarity, and conviction, even though he insists he is simply trying to “keep it groovy and not scare the neighbors.” His tone is rich, his phrasing unhurried but full of intent, and his lines tell stories shaped by decades of performing and teaching around the world. Baron gives the quartet its grounding force and its spirit of playful exploration.
